FlightNight Dec 15th: Banana Madness with Beatrice!

09 Dec 2018 17:35 - 15 Dec 2018 16:46 #41155 by thebroons
And for FlightNight December 15th, it's time you all grasped the nettle, bit the bullet and faced your fears.
Prepare for a night with....

....The Death Banana! (BWAHAHA! Yes, I AM evil!)

Yes, the ONLY acceptable aircraft will be the CH47 or variants from the FGUK hangar.

If you find you are unable to fly it, you can download a replacement FDM for it. Unzip and place the ch47d.xml in the main ch47 folder and overwrite the file that's in it already.

The premise of our wee evening of fun is to practice a drill for Chinook evacuation support to the Beatrice Oil Field, which happily has 3 FG oil rigs. Our flight will take us from Lossiemouth (EGQS) out past the North Sea fix "MORAY" to the Oilfield. We'll mess around here, then break for 5, then it's off to our final destination of Kirkwall (EGPA) via the fix "WIK05" and Lamb Holme airfield (EG62).

On the map there's a couple of alternate points to start if you / when you crash. Not overly near the oilfield, but then Scotland's got a bunch of empty in it.

For your edification, the route manager plan is HERE .

OR

EGQS (Lossiemouth) - START
MORAY (Fix) - 31.1nm
Beatrice Oil Field (Lat/Long waypoint) - 7.3 nm
WIK05 (Fix) - 19 nm
EG62 (Lamb Holme) - 29.2 nm
EDPA (Kirkwall) - 4.2 nm
END

Total - 91.8 nm

All voices coms will be using Team Speak:-

For those about to DIE I salute you!

there are 3 different bananas in FG, CH47 is only one of them.
You also have the H21 and the HUP retriever.
None have any form of working autopilot.

Well I just gave it a go (having never tried it before)
It went exactly how I imagine a night with Shania Twain would.

She sounded great, looked fantastic for her age and I lasted about 3 seconds and then died.

Oh c'mon. It's not that bad.

Once you get the hang of it you can power drift it around the sky. Fun!

Tip: use joystick direction with variation in power control to move around - tail rotor manipulations tend to be more "violent" in execution, leading to yours.

For the record, I've turned down an invitation to a party in order to get flying with you guys. Can't wait!

First post updated with text route description plus distances. Never fear - we're not going to go full tilt through this (unless you tilt wrong and plummet to your death).

We will leave Dyce and go out to the platforms. I've allowed lots of time to mess around here, and incorporate the break too. Minimum accommodation on platforms will be 6, although I believe my flying stalwarts can pack 'em in tighter. We can rotate through to make sure everyone who needs a quick break gets one.

Then it's off to pass to the east of Wick, overfly Lamb Holme to the principal town in the Orkneys, Kirkwall, and done!

last Q - anyone setting up a Dead Pool? Bwahahahaha!

Couple of oddities. (No surprise there!)

Using the Router Manager plan, the GPS / FMS value it puts into the Autopilot controls is wrong. If I have a bearing, indicated in the RM as 039, it will show in the AP as 339

Consequently, I'll be using the RM to plot Heading Bug instead to navigate.

The real weather close to Dyce is fair with a cloud top around 7000 feet. We will be using LIVE WEATHER and starting in the MORNING. We will assemble, group up and climb gently through 7k out to the platforms. After this phase, we'll see what Mother Nature is throwing our way and decide weather and altitude on the fly for the rest of the Odyssey.
