FlightNight Saturday 11 August: Kamchatka Kruise

08 Aug 2018 18:53 - 11 Aug 2018 15:53 #39837 by thebroons

Yup, we're going so far East we'll almost be in the West...

Here's our flight plan for the day. Real weather, dawn t/o.

Mission details:

Aircraft must be a Russian or Soviet built beast.
Aircraft must be capable of 450kts sustained, and not in a dive with a following wind.
Aircraft, if not from the FGUK PUBLIC Hangar, should be posted by Saturday morning to avoid Ugly Blue/Yellow Gliders of Aesthetic Doom (UBYGADs)

Suggestions ?

Not familiar with Ruskie beasts in our hangar, SU37 perhaps - but need to be de-hoovered.

Ooh, sounds painful!

Here's an oddball for consideration

The Tu-22 there (and in fgaddon) is based on the wrong weights

Proper weights for various Tu-22 (not M) can be found here:

fas.org/nuke/guide/russia/bomber/tu-22.htm

basic empty weight should be 86000lb (not 87000kg!) & then the ballast needs rejigging - I did this in the past but recently deleted it in a rebuild of my whole fgaddon copy - then you end up with a plane that has a fairly normal thrust to weight ratio for a bomber

Here is a Tu-22 FDM with the correct weights, and with reasonable lift & drag numbers

www.dropbox.com/s/caz2vmh55tz92za/tu22-yasim.xml?dl=0

The CG is roughly in the right place (28% MAC), and it lands with full flaps at high weights with about 6 deg AoA - it feels about right

roll rate might be a bit high

engines have correct TSFC+ATSFC (same engines as M-50), and afterburners now work at 95% (they were actually inoperative before)

top speed hasn't been checked & will likely need tuning - the real aircraft was limited by the performance of the engine intakes at high mach, so it would need to be modelled differently anyway

Doing some more tuning based on Blinder-B weights (the fuel in the current FDM is about a third of what there should be) - I'll post a full patch to the model in a bit (based on FGAddon)

Full patch against FGAddon Tu-22 here:

www.dropbox.com/s/gcoxr588t3zm8op/Tu-22.diff?dl=0

*should* apply against FGMEMBERS one as well, but I haven't checked

The Tu-22 needs a proper autopilot - it uses the default one & it can't seek altitude, but pitch settings work just fine, as is roll

EDIT: apply with "patch -p4 < Tu-22.diff" when in the Tu-22-Blinder directory

NOTE: it now has the correct approach speed (174kts vs 136kts before)

The Tu-22 really needs brake parachutes - it's supposed to have 2 that look about the same size as used on Soviet fighters

Still - I managed to land on EGOV runway 17 with 35% fuel & it took about 3/4 of the runway to stop

If someone can give it a test to see what they think, that would be great. If it's ok I'll propose my changes to FGdata - hopefully I can get someone to commit them

Other Russian/Soviet Aircraft not in FGAddon:

MiG-29 (my tree): github.com/alexeijd/MiG-29_9-12

- JSBSim, flies well, has autostart

MiG-21bis (Pinto): github.com/l0k1/MiG-21bis

- JSBSim, flies well, no autostart (not hard to start though), full weapons

MiG-21UPG (Sergei Solyshko): github.com/Sky4Viper/MiG-21UPG

- YASim, flies ok (sort of), has autostart (but you need to turn on the electronics), weapons, DDS textures (need to convert for me to see)

SU-27SK (Yanes Bechir): github.com/yanes19/SU-27SK

- JSBSim, FCS/SAS is a bit broken, auto load out, auto start

Tu-160 Blackjack (HerbyW): github.com/HerbyW/Tu-160-Blackjack

- YASim, autostart, uses weird particle effects when afterburner is on (bright orange which is weird as the Tu-160 & Tu-22M3 both have blue-white afterburner flames in RL)

Tu-95MR Bear (HerbyW): github.com/HerbyW/Tu-95MR

- YASim, autostart, probably won't get to 450kts so can ignore

I will be taking the classic Mig-21bis (in Boneyard).

Flies as well as ever (remember it IS Russian). Gonna put 3 drop tanks on of course.... :cheer:

Might bring MiG-29 as the Yak-130 can't keep up.

Well....my FlightGear seems hosed. Again. Huge lags lasting minutes at a time and low frame rates. Again.

Trying to resolve it but it looks like I'm gonna have to purge the whole mess and start over. Again.

I'll do the best I can tonight but if I disappear without a word it's because I'm struggling to make it go, frustrated, and throwing shit around the room.

Again.

Turn everything down a notch or 2 (or OFF) - it might not look very pretty to you but atleast you'll be with us tonight.!!

Hope all goes well. Otherwise - see ya later

i tried all that....doesn't help.

Here's a hoot. I can spawn any aircraft anywhere with uncapped frame rates near 100 fps. As soon as I move the aircraft to any location in Kamchatka I'm toast - lockups, freezes, low frame rates. My memory usage is pegged as is my CPU usage.

Move the aircraft out of Kamchatka....low CPU usage, Memory usage returns to normal, extremely fast FPS. No lags - no lock ups.

You tell me...WTF?

If I didn't know better I'd assume I'm under attack. But that's just crazy talk, eh?
