Personal Project: Draken International

Opening a topic line here for me to post what's going on with this, what it is, etc. Will accept any help, altho' not required ;D

Background

I got into this thanks to Hugh Wilson. It's entirely his fault! My interest was piqued about a year ago, when I was looking into the work done to generate the A-4K. This bird has a great history, which I'm sure y'all can Google if you've the interest. The Cliff Notes here is that the final owner of these magnificent beasts is Draken Intl., whose use for them is contract air support and training for the US military, including provision of aggressor packages.

Armed only with the silvery tongue of a Scot, I weaseled my way into getting a personal tour of the Draken hangar at Linder Lakeland, their Florida base. And so my interest (obsession?) begins.

Project Goals and status
In an ideal world, I'd like to generate liveries for all Draken inventory. Not all their aircraft are in FG however, but close enough. I already have some livery sweetness completed.

I'd like to eventually emulate their fleet and work on the scenery at their home airport (Linder Lakeland Airport KLAL). They have the following stock:

Mikoyan Mig 21Bis - FG model exists - Draken livery in process
Aero Vodochody L-159E Honey Badger - FG model exists - Draken livery COMPLETE
Douglas A-4K Skyhawk - FG model exists - Draken livery COMPLETE
Aermacchi MB339CB - FG model exists - FGmembers and Helijah. Have to check functionality.
Aero L-39 Albatross - FG model exists - just tracked down. Liv IN PROCESS.
Mirage F1M - FG model exists - Draken livery mocked up, some mesh weirdness
Atlas Cheetah (Mirage III variant) - found Helijah's Mirage III NG, which is close...

For scenery, I've already got a bunch of aerials and the equivalent in FG, and should be able (over time) to generate a reasonable facsimile of the airport. There are some OSG? objects I'll have to see if they can be moved, as they are in the wrong places.

I have possibly suckered Johan and Flying Toaster to assist with the Mirage F1, so we'll see how that goes. There is supposedly a radically better mesh that's not yet published for it.

One real world positive from this is that I got the proposed Mirage F1 paint from Draken and put it onto an FG version as a mock up. My Draken contact was pretty happy to have some shots from different angles of the 3D model - more intuitive as to how it would look than the simple 2D plan and side views. I'm going to explore the notion of being able to demo a number of potential paints in FG before committing to applying the Dulux with him as a cost saving measure and to better assess what the final product looks like.

Anyway, that's my long term kick. If any of this interest you, I'm always happy for help. The Atlas Cheetah would be an interesting one, simply due to the interesting history of this 4th gen upgrade.

Over & out,

G

Sound interesting, but huge project.

L39 lives in our boneyard www.fguk.eu/index.php/hangar/download/18...boneyard/107-l39-v17

I don't know what condition the L39 is in, but as one of Tom's projects, it ought to be pretty good.

Sounds cool. Good luck with it!
I don't promise anything, but I might give you a help when free with the scenery part of the airport committing directly to TerraSync.
2D layout looks accurate and doesn't need working on it:

I'm in with the Mirage F.1 if its going

The Atlas Cheetah is an interesting bird - similar to the IAI Kfir but with the Atar 9K50 instead of the J79

The Albatross (hope this isn't emblematic of my future success! aka Rime of the Ancient Mariner)

Draken operates these primarily in a airshow / demonstrator role, most often as the Black Diamonds Jet Team (this liv)

More to address Mav and the scenery component here.

Here's a pic (aerial) with fence line in yellow.

Now the same but with the scenery in FG...

Now a pic in FG with proposed site of new buildings in blue

And the same building in the aerial.

Draken Hanger is the big honking' one at the bottom.

That's the plan. If I were more ambitious I'd include the museum to the NW. There's a static Piedmont 727 bus, a Lockheed Pogo, a X-15 and a Thunderbirds Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star on a pole all pretty much outside. Wowzah!

Would need a custom CT which I'd be doing too.
