Personal Project: Draken International

04 Aug 2018 14:26 - 03 Sep 2018 16:49 #39770 by thebroons
Opening a topic line here for me to post what's going on with this, what it is, etc. Will accept any help, altho' not required ;D

Background

I got into this thanks to Hugh Wilson. It's entirely his fault! My interest was piqued about a year ago, when I was looking into the work done to generate the A-4K. This bird has a great history, which I'm sure y'all can Google if you've the interest. The Cliff Notes here is that the final owner of these magnificent beasts is Draken Intl., whose use for them is contract air support and training for the US military, including provision of aggressor packages.

Armed only with the silvery tongue of a Scot, I weaseled my way into getting a personal tour of the Draken hangar at Linder Lakeland, their Florida base. And so my interest (obsession?) begins.

Project Goals and status
In an ideal world, I'd like to generate liveries for all Draken inventory. Not all their aircraft are in FG however, but close enough. I already have some livery sweetness completed.

I'd like to eventually emulate their fleet and work on the scenery at their home airport (Linder Lakeland Airport KLAL). They have the following stock:

Mikoyan Mig 21Bis - FG model exists - Draken livery in process
Aero Vodochody L-159E Honey Badger - FG model exists - Draken livery COMPLETE
Douglas A-4K Skyhawk - FG model exists - Draken livery COMPLETE
Aermacchi MB339CB - FG model exists - Draken livery COMPLETE
Aero L-39 Albatross - FG model exists - Draken livery COMPLETE
Mirage F1M - FG model exists - Draken livery mocked up, some mesh weirdness
Atlas Cheetah (Mirage III variant) - found Helijah's Mirage III NG, which is close - Draken livery COMPLETE

For scenery, I've already got a bunch of aerials and the equivalent in FG, and should be able (over time) to generate a reasonable facsimile of the airport. There are some OSG? objects I'll have to see if they can be moved, as they are in the wrong places.

I have possibly suckered Johan and Flying Toaster to assist with the Mirage F1, so we'll see how that goes. There is supposedly a radically better mesh that's not yet published for it.

One real world positive from this is that I got the proposed Mirage F1 paint from Draken and put it onto an FG version as a mock up. My Draken contact was pretty happy to have some shots from different angles of the 3D model - more intuitive as to how it would look than the simple 2D plan and side views. I'm going to explore the notion of being able to demo a number of potential paints in FG before committing to applying the Dulux with him as a cost saving measure and to better assess what the final product looks like.

Anyway, that's my long term kick. If any of this interest you, I'm always happy for help. The Atlas Cheetah would be an interesting one, simply due to the interesting history of this 4th gen upgrade.

Over & out,

G

Sound interesting, but huge project.

L39 lives in our boneyard www.fguk.eu/index.php/hangar/download/18...boneyard/107-l39-v17

I don't know what condition the L39 is in, but as one of Tom's projects, it ought to be pretty good.

Sounds cool. Good luck with it!
I don't promise anything, but I might give you a help when free with the scenery part of the airport committing directly to TerraSync.
2D layout looks accurate and doesn't need working on it:

I'm in with the Mirage F.1 if its going

The Atlas Cheetah is an interesting bird - similar to the IAI Kfir but with the Atar 9K50 instead of the J79

The Albatross (hope this isn't emblematic of my future success! aka Rime of the Ancient Mariner)

Draken operates these primarily in a airshow / demonstrator role, most often as the Black Diamonds Jet Team (this liv)

More to address Mav and the scenery component here.

Here's a pic (aerial) with fence line in yellow.

Now the same but with the scenery in FG...

Now a pic in FG with proposed site of new buildings in blue

And the same building in the aerial.

Draken Hanger is the big honking' one at the bottom.

That's the plan. If I were more ambitious I'd include the museum to the NW. There's a static Piedmont 727 bus, a Lockheed Pogo, a X-15 and a Thunderbirds Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star on a pole all pretty much outside. Wowzah!

Would need a custom CT which I'd be doing too.

They have some seriously cool camo.

And their MiG 21bis....

The problematic one is the Mirage F1M. Imagemap is ... difficult. Problem with wing spoilers, port side is variably transparent or not.

Rough Mock Up (based on Draken's paint proposal I got from my contact there)
No aircraft have yet been painted.

They are in negotiations with the Spanish AF to retain the Tigermeet paint on one of the acquired jets (14 + 37).

The green/green camo for the Macchi & A-4 is actually the RNZAF markings (Draken agreed to keep the markings when they bought them off the NZ government)

It's a bit weird seeing them still flying in what is effectively a private air force

You're dead on regards the RNZAF camo paint. Draken acquired these when the NZ govt. decided it only needed a helo air force with the only fixed wing being transports and tankers.

Side note: inspired the helo drivers to mock the FW pilots here:

A point on the Draken agreeing to keep the markings bit. Draken WANTED to keep the markings as a nod to the history, RNZAF agreed to them retaining the colors, decals and squadron marks (for the A-4K Skyhawk). The MB339s retain the camo, but no RNZAF marks. Draken is surprisingly (happily) invested in not only the airframes as a way to earn their shilling, but also the history of the aircraft themselves. Hence the negotiations on the Spanish AF marks for the Tigermeet Mirage F1. This will be at the discretion of the Spanish AF, NOT Draken.

It's a bit weird seeing them still flying in what is effectively a private air force

Yes, given that there isn't really a parallel anywhere else, you're absolutely right. However, the USAF and US Naval Aviation have drawn down their aggressor squadrons in favor of more combat available wings. Consequently, there's a big hole in providing Red Air training (USAF only has 2 aggressor sqns now), and an increasing look to have contractor services fill the gap. Since I've been interested in Draken Intl., I've now learned that it is one of 4 credible outfits in North America. The players are:

Draken International: (Home base: KLAL)

Tactical Air Support: (Home base: KPHF)

Airborne Tactical Advantage Company : (Home base: KAFW)

Air USA : (Home base: KUIN)

The US govt. is serious about getting this type of contract support. There's an RFP ( http://airforcemag.com/Features/Pages/2018/August%202018/USAF-Releases-RFP-for-Contracted-Adversary-Air.aspxRequest for Proposal ) for hundreds of millions of dollars for this, and expected only to grow with increasing demand. Also, expect to see helo players come on the market in 3-5 years to essentially mirror the jet biz.

That's the daggum down low.... ;)

I'm quite jealous that you get to go see the RNZAF A-4s & Macchis!

These guys seem to be the only equivalent in the UK (mostly flying hunters)

- 3 Hunter T7/T8

Now have:

KLAL tower
KLAL Terminal
KLAL Aero Academy Building
KLAL Draken Intl. Hangar

Of course, the Draken hangar has a crap OSG object in it to be removed. Supposed to correlate with the round office bit of the Aero Academy.

I think the rest of the structures can be done using standard available scenery models.
