Only something like a better particle simulation would really take advantage of hardware acceleration; and possibly there are other areas where we could benefit from a well defined physics engine.

The only downside is that the hardware acceleration is NVIDIA only; otherwise it'll run on the CPU[1].

First thing really is to study PhysX, what PhysX can do and come up with some ideas as to what we could use it for.

[1] I've read reports that the CPU version of PhysX is comparatively slow, and as I'm using AMD it's unlikely that I'll spend much time looking at this.
