Only something like a better particle simulation would really take advantage of hardware acceleration; and possibly there are other areas where we could benefit from a well defined physics engine.
The only downside is that the hardware acceleration is NVIDIA only; otherwise it'll run on the CPU.
First thing really is to study PhysX, what PhysX can do and come up with some ideas as to what we could use it for.
 I've read reports that the CPU version of PhysX is comparatively slow, and as I'm using AMD it's unlikely that I'll spend much time looking at this.
