Centenary of the Royal Air Force

Many Happy Returns to our much-loved Royal Air Force, which was founded 100 years (and about 10 weeks) ago and flew a celebratory flypast at Buckingham Palace today. I will hopefully be putting up a copy of the BBC's programme when it becomes available later today, for those who are interested.

I was at a friends fixing their printer & was late getting out, but I saw the E-3 Sentry onwards from south London - a very big flight of Typhoons flew just before the Red Arrows

It looked like there was a flight of 3 F-35 in there?

The missus took some photos with her phone from the top of her work building in central London - will see what they look like tonite

Sadly, I was asleep when it happened, and I'm unfortunately a fair distance from Central London and the A12 corridor now. The programme has not yet appeared on iPlayer, and may not be available to those overseas, but I have... other options. Hope to be able to post it soon!

Saw it live on here:
since I don't have the BBC, fairly good stream and the flypast was amazing.
This was the actual fleet:

Hope to see that better video Algy!

EDIT: What if we do something similar with what we have? I know I'm crazy but could be a cool turnout.

Absolutely. I think it would be pretty cool - in fact, I was thinking about organising the flight on the 21st, maybe we could do it then? I'm planning to handle the video then, too, so I could do commentary and filming...

Fun to watch that Big Jet TV stream, Mav, though it seems the guy knows more about larger aircraft (predictably) than the fighters... mistook the F-35 for the Eurofighter, and they were supposed to be the stars of the show, first time seen in public...

Yep, I got a little nervous too when I saw that, was ok though overall.
Although then I watched the replay of Sky News filming from one of their TV choppers and got really angry because camera-man missed like half of the flypast not knowing where planes/helis were and mind, he filmed them but probalby didn't saw them at all. Only thing he got right was Red Arrows, because you cannot just miss that smoke you know  .

I'm looking forward to that flight then! Keep me updated!

Ah nice - is that the order they appeared in (the jpg)? It looks correct at least from what I saw from the E-3 Sentry

I just realised its a pity they've called the F-35 the Lightning, doesn't seem appropriate for the UK considering the history of the name in the RAF :(

Ah thanks for posting the video, it was good to see them all

I always get a bit teary when seeing a Lancaster as my grandmother and all of her siblings worked on the Avro (she called it A V Roes) production line on the Lancaster during WWII

One thing that wasn't quite apparent from the video viewpoint as from my viewpoint (Wandsworth Common) was just how high alpha the Typhoons were - you can kind of make it out, but it was really apparent from directly south of the flightpath

sorry I didn't get any pics, I wasn't aware it was on until this morning & I went hunting around the house for the camera battery charger, but didn't find it

This copy should be pretty high quality, if not true HD - it looked pretty good on my UHD 4K TV.

Download here - It's the whole programme, which is three hours plus, and has plenty of documentary films spanning the history of the RAF. Let me know what the quality is like...

Just watching the BBC's coverage of the flypast - I'll watch the whole programme when I have four hours to spare - and it's interesting that one of the F-35 pilots says (paraphrasing) "All being well, we'll have three aircraft flying down the Mall. I hope we'll have at least one, I'll be happy with that".

Not sure what he means, but it doesn't sound enormously confidence inspiring in the new type!! ;)
